Sussex County Booking Releases
Sussex County Booking Releases cover arrests and jail records from the south end of Delaware. The county seat is Georgetown, and the main booking site is the Sussex Correctional Institution. As with the rest of Delaware, the state DOC holds every adult, so there is no county jail. To find a person in custody, use the state inmate locator first. Then check local agencies like the Sheriff, the Georgetown Police, DSP Troop 5, and DSP Troop 7. This page walks you through each source for Sussex County arrest, booking, and release data.
Sussex County Overview
Sussex County Sheriff and Booking Releases
The Sussex County Sheriff's Office is at 2 The Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947, at (302) 855-7830. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, closed on holidays. The Sheriff does not run a jail. The office serves civil papers, handles sheriff sales, moves prisoners, and secures the courthouse. For inmate matters, the public should contact Sussex Correctional Institution or the state DOC. For warrant checks and criminal history, the Delaware State Police Bureau of Identification is the right spot.
You can see the full list of office duties at the Sussex County Sheriff page, which also lists the fax line and mail address.
The Sheriff works closely with the courts to move inmates for hearings and with the DOC for transport.
Sussex Correctional Institution Booking Releases
The Sussex Correctional Institution is the main intake site for Sussex County. SCI sits at 23203 DuPont Boulevard, Georgetown, DE 19947, at (302) 856-5280. It is one of the oldest prisons in the state, open since 1931. SCI holds men at maximum, medium, and minimum security levels. The site has room for about 1,200 inmates. Staff process all male bookings from Sussex County police agencies. That covers intake photos, fingerprints, a health screen, and the paperwork that sets the DOC file.
Programs at SCI include schools, job training, work crews, faith services, and the Road to Recovery treatment track. Treatment uses the Therapeutic Community model, which keeps people with shared goals in the same unit. The SCI facility page shows visit rules, contact info, and mail paths for inmates.
SCI is the first stop for most Sussex County Booking Releases and the main source of current custody data for men in this part of the state.
Women arrested in Sussex County do not go to SCI. They travel north to the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution in New Castle County. Baylor is the only female prison in the state, so every female intake in Delaware ends up there.
Sussex Community Corrections Booking Releases
The Sussex Community Corrections Center is next to SCI at 23207 DuPont Boulevard, Georgetown, DE 19947, at (302) 856-5790. The SCCC is a Level IV facility. It runs work release, short-term treatment, community service slots, and transitional housing for people close to release. The site is also home to the Sussex Violation of Probation Center, which holds probation violators during assessment. A VOP hold often sets a new line in the state Booking Releases file, so staff here update the DOC record for each case.
SCCC programs target re-entry. That means skills for work, care for substance use, and help with housing. Many people finish a sentence at SCCC before full release. See the Sussex Community Corrections page for site details and program lists.
Sussex Court Records and Booking Releases
The Sussex County Courthouse is at 1 The Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947, at (302) 855-7055. It holds the Superior Court, the Court of Common Pleas, and Family Court for the county. The Prothonotary's Office keeps court records and takes public requests. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Complete a public records request form at the counter, give the subject's name and date of birth if you have them, add the case number or event date, show a photo ID, and pay the fee. The fee is $10 for a search plus $1 per page for copies.
Mail requests go to Sussex County Prothonotary's Office, ATTN: Records Request, 1 The Circle, Suite 2, Georgetown, DE 19947. Include the subject's name, date of birth, the info you need, your contact details, and a check or money order. You can also run an online search through CourtConnect or the Delaware Superior Court page.
The same state court portal covers all three counties, so you can switch between Kent and Sussex with ease.
Court records tied to a Sussex County Booking Releases event include:
- Charging document filed by the prosecutor
- Bail order entered at the first hearing
- Plea form or verdict slip from the trial judge
- Sentence order that sets the DOC release date
- VOP reports that can lead to new holds
Georgetown Police and Local Agencies
The Georgetown Police Department serves the county seat. Arrests by Georgetown Police often lead to booking at SCI across town. The department takes records requests under Delaware FOIA. Seaford, Lewes, Milford, and smaller towns in the county each run their own force. All of them work with DSP and the DOC on bookings that lead to holds.
Delaware State Police Troop 5 is in Bridgeville, at (302) 337-8100, and covers west Sussex County. Troop 7 is in Lewes, at (302) 703-3200, and covers east Sussex. DSP runs an online arrest archive and news page that is a strong source for recent arrest info. You can view it from the Delaware State Police homepage.
Third-party resources can point to the right agency too. The Sussex County arrest records overview walks through the statute, the forms, and the SBI path. That page cites 29 Del. C. § 10001 for public records and Title 11 § 4322 for criminal history rules. For official Criminal History Request Forms, go through the Delaware State Police Bureau of Identification at 655 Bay Road, Dover, DE 19901, at (302) 739-5871.
Note: Some Sussex County Booking Releases items may be held back when tied to an open case or when a court seals the file for a clear legal cause.
Sussex County FOIA Path
FOIA gets you a full copy of a Sussex County Booking Releases file when the state locator falls short. Each office has a FOIA coordinator. The Sheriff, the DOC, the courts, and each local force all take written requests. Under state law the agency has 15 business days to respond. Delaware's FOIA statute sits in Title 29, 29 Del. C. §§ 10001 through 10008. For the statutory limits on criminal history info, see Title 11 of the Delaware Code.
Some Sussex County records may be held back. Open case files can be closed until the case ends. Medical info and juvenile data are often pulled out. If an office says no, file a complaint with the Delaware Department of Justice Civil Division.
